What is an MPO cable?

An MPO cable (Multi-fiber Push On) is a type of high-density, multi-fiber connector cable designed to connect multiple optical fibers within a small space. Here are some key points about MPO cables:

  1. High Density: MPO cables can accommodate up to 12 to 144 optical fibers in a compact size, significantly saving space and simplifying the deployment of large-scale fiber optic networks.
  2. Types: MPO cables are available in two basic types: patch cords (tail cables) and trunk cables. Patch cords are used to connect devices to other parts of the network, while trunk cables provide direct connections for large numbers of fibers between different racks or devices in a data center.
  3. Fiber Counts: MPO cables offer a variety of fiber counts, commonly including 8, 12, 24, 48, and 72 fibers, to meet the needs of different-sized networks.
  4. Fiber Types: MPO cables can use either single-mode (such as OS2) or multi-mode (such as OM3/OM4) fiber cores. The choice of fiber type depends on the transmission distance requirements and the type of network.
  5. Polarity and Arrangement: MPO cables have different polarity classifications, such as A-type (straight-through), B-type (crossover), and C-type (paired crossover). The fibers within the cable can be arranged in various ways, such as straight, 12-fiber 8+4 arrangement, and 24-fiber dual arrangement, to meet the connection needs of different devices.
  6. Compatibility: MPO cables are compatible with MPO connectors and adapters, facilitating connections with other MPO cables and devices, and simplifying network deployment and management.
  7. Ease of Installation: MPO connectors are designed as push-on types, allowing quick connections or disconnections without the need for tools or with only simple tools.
  8. Applications: MPO cables are widely used in the telecommunications industry, data centers, computer networks, and other situations that require a large number of fiber optic connections. They support high-speed data transmission and low latency, making them ideal for applications such as high-performance computing, cloud computing, and large-scale video surveillance networks.

In summary, MPO cables are an important solution for high-performance, high-density fiber optic connections, playing a crucial role in modern communication and data transmission fields.
